Foodbank Support Across Aotearoa
The Salvation Army operates around 70 foodbanks across the motu, from Kaitaia to Invercargill. Over the latest reporting period, we distributed the equivalent of 31,849 standard food parcels, supporting 65,279 people (based on the Aotearoa Food Parcel Measure).
How Often Whānau Needed Support
Over the past 12 months:
- 46.6% received food support 1–2 times
- 36.4% received support 3–6 times
- 10.7% received support 7–12 times
- 6.2% needed support more than 12 times
Why People Are Coming to Us
The most common reasons whānau seek food support are the cost of living and insufficient incomes, whether relying on a benefit or low-paid work.
Emerging Trends Across Our Centres
A significant trend reported nationwide is an increase in people who are homeless coming to foodbanks. This is linked to reductions in emergency housing and the ongoing shortage of affordable housing.
Our data shows:
- 22.3% increase in food support for single men
- 14.8% increase for single women
- Compared with a 9.6% increase overall
