Why Your Support Matters

Our latest foodbank survey paints a clear picture: the need in our communities remains high, and for many Centres, the pressure is intensifying.

Across Aotearoa, 80% of our foodbanks report they are sometimes or frequently unable to meet the demand for kai from whānau. This challenge is being felt everywhere—from urban centres to rural communities—highlighting how widespread and persistent the need is.

Behind this statistic are real constraints. Many foodbanks are operating beyond capacity, facing a combination of:
•    Insufficient food supplies
•    Limited staff and volunteers
•    Increasing numbers of whānau seeking support

To keep up, Centres are having to introduce more measures each year just to manage demand—often making difficult decisions about how to stretch limited resources.
At the same time, the types of support needed are becoming more costly. Meat continues to be the most in-demand item, reflecting how difficult it is for families to afford. Other essential items include milk and dairy products, fresh fruit and vegetables, basic pantry staples, as well as cleaning and hygiene products.

Looking ahead, we know there is more to be done. Capacity constraints—such as inconsistent supply of fresh food, limited storage (like chillers and freezers), and reliance on volunteers—remain key challenges. Alongside meeting immediate needs, we are committed to supporting whānau beyond crisis, helping them move up the Food Ladder through education, skills-building, and clearer pathways toward long-term wellbeing.

Your continued support plays a vital role in both meeting urgent need today and building stronger, more resilient communities for tomorrow.
