It Takes an Army
When the cupboards are empty, everything feels heavier.
Worry, shame, fear — hunger never comes alone.
The Salvation Army puts food on the table, and wraps people in care that stays.
Because no one should face hunger on their own —
and when the need is great, it takes an Army.
Give today. Help fill a plate — and a life — with hope.
Building lasting food security together
Help in the longer term
Hunger doesn’t announce itself.
It arrives quietly — and far too many face it alone.
The Red Shield Appeal exists because food is more than a meal. It’s dignity, relief, and the first step toward stability.
Your support helps put food on the table today — and, through our Food Champions, builds lasting food security by restoring confidence, skills, and connection for the long term.
Because real change doesn’t stop at one plate.
It takes people coming together.
It takes an Army.
The Red Shield Street Appeal Returns | 4–10 May
We’re marking the 62nd year of The Red Shield Street Appeal, supporting individuals and whānau across Aotearoa who need food support and wrap‑around care.
From 4–10 May, our volunteers will be outside supermarkets nationwide, collecting donations to help ensure people can access the food they need. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a real difference.
If you can’t visit a collection point in person, you can still take part by donating online.
Your support provides more than food — it offers hope, dignity, and practical help when it’s needed most.
It Takes an Army
Our Red Shield Appeal Story
When Leona and Nick moved to Auckland for a fresh start, rising rents left their family without a home. Suddenly, they needed help.
With support from The Salvation Army and donors like you, the family was guided into stable housing and surrounded with wrap‑around care. A safe home gave them the chance to rebuild — financially, emotionally, and as a whānau.
“They wrapped themselves around our whole family,” Leona says. “They helped us rebuild our lives.”
This is the impact of the Red Shield Appeal.
Because changing a life takes more than one person.
